Martin Olsen captained the fishing vessel "The Standard" from 1908 to 1935. He retired and beached the 52-foot ship at a sand spit on Bainbridge Island. Local kids used it as their playhouse and diving platform for ten years. Martin died on October 26, 1945. His neighbors were stunned when "The Standard" floated away that same afternoon. Stranger still, it came back on the day of his funeral.
