Sigrun starts a new position with the ailing Baroness Heidenreich who resides with her devoted groundskeeper, Otto. Their customs are unsettling, but Sigrun is possessed by the need to know her true identity - the Baroness directed the "Aryan" nursery where, in 1944, she was born without record. She soon discovers a secret SS archive, with only her file missing. The Baroness had realized who the inquisitive nurse with the Valkyrie name really was, and saw her place in larger pattern: Sigrun will join her folkish-feminist secret society - which once sought to take over the Third Reich - and continue her life's work. The manipulative influence of the Baroness and Otto proves effective - Sigrun slowly yields to their occult practices. Finally, she learns of her mother's tragic death, who is summoned by the Baroness during a morbid seance. Utterly disillusioned, Sigrun wants to leave, while inside her something uncanny awakens.
