Broken (2017)

Based in part on a true story; Jewel, once a gospel singing prodigy in her youth, is now an abused lounge singer in Atlanta who spends her days unfulfilled singing in seemingly empty smoke-filled clubs and bars. She reflects on how she was abandoned by her parents at a young age and raised by her grandmother, Mamma Strong. Jewel had a loving but strict Christian upbringing. After graduating from High School she decided to pass on a college education against her grandmother's wishes in order to pursue her dream of becoming an R&B Recording Artist. This choice alters the course of her life as she moves to Atlanta, leaving behind her childhood sweetheart Jeremiah, only to find her studio recording submissions constantly being rejected by local labels. In addition to working a lack luster day job, Jewel is constantly taunted by roommates who later finesse her into attending a private party for local music mogul, Jay-Von. This turns out to be a traumatic mistake that would set in motion a series of bad decisions and tragic events that sends her spiraling down a path of depression and abuse that she can't seem to find her way back from. When an especially violent clash with her abusive boyfriend sees her hospitalized, Jewel returns home where she hides in solitude. During this time she discovers that Jeremiah has become a successful bank executive and is engaged. The two eventually reconnect but Jewel continues to isolate herself at home. Seeing this, her Grandmother enlists the help of Dr. Price to help Jewel spiritually heal and reclaim her faith and her voice. Feeling abandoned by God, It's only in her darkest moment that Jewel realizes---God had not failed her, He held her.
