After starting at a new school, black teenager Timothy MacRae is consistently told he "acts white" by his new peers. Reason being, his nerdy interests and demeanor does not fit neatly into their stereotypical perception of Blackness. Disturbed by this and wavering in his sense of self, Timothy discovers a small patch of skin where he is actively losing pigment. It would seem that Timothy is in fact, turning white. As the patch continues to spread and Timothy begins to lose recognition of the man in the mirror, he must learn what it truly means to be black or risk losing his racial identity for good.
