While baking an orange soufflé, the prostitute Hilda is unsuccessfully advocating for a deeper relationship with her rich, 78-year-old friend Pennington, her only customer for the last seven years. She wants him to take her on as his full-time mistress and away from the toppling smokestacks of the smudged Middle West - but he leaves her flat. Hilda begins at stalemate and ends there, as crumpled as her uncooperative soufflé. TV adaptation of Nobel Prize winner Bellow's 1966 exploration of the sexes.
