Rusk is a gumshoe private detective who drinks alcohol constantly and wanders around Sydney reminiscing about a case from the past that still haunts him. Through a series of episodic flashbacks Rusk recalls "The Case of the Dirty Mirrors". Rusk explains how he became friends with the eccentric and rich teetotaller Richard Sexton who became a millionaire through operating seedy sex clubs. Tangled up in the plot are a number of enigmatic characters, most of whom in turn hire Rusk to investigate another character, or to perform tasks which are completely in a conflict of interest with another character's demands. Rusk believes he has become caught in the middle of a sinister criminal conspiracy, but his investigations appear to raise more questions rather than provide answers. His alcoholism accelerates, Rusk becomes unhinged and he falls to pieces as he gambles relentlessly with Sexton on greyhound races, always losing. Ultimately it is revealed that Sexton is the mastermind of a criminal drug production network, however he sells none of the methamphetamine he produces, rather he eats all of the pills himself, which is a shocking revelation to all. Rusk and Sexton murder a policeman with a Samoan war club in a violent conclusion to the film. Sexton flees the country for Venezuela and Rusk never hears from him again. Rusk is taken to a lunatic asylum again.
