The innovative and pioneering physician who prevented the Islands of Hawaii from experiencing the same spread of HIV/AIDS. Take a look at the leaders who have carried on his legacy and the programs that keep Hawaii safe. In 1981, Dr. David McEwan diagnosed the first AIDS case in the Hawaii Islands. He moved quickly to establish a means of preventing the spread through education and harm reduction therapeutic models; and by 1983, the Life Foundation was established. The first AIDS Walk in Hawaii took place in 1991, and the Life Foundation merged with the CHOW Project in 2018 to create Hawaii Health and Harm Reduction Center.
