Matthew hasn't spoken to his father in years. So when Matt Sr shows up in New York looking remarkably ill, Matthew is reluctant to engage. But his father's condition quickly worsens when he returns to Miami, and Matthew is forced to upend a romantic weekend with his long-distance boyfriend to sit by his father's bedside and grapple with the entrenched conflict between the two of them. What makes things worse is Matt Sr's young boyfriend Rich, with whom Matthew immediately butts heads over Matt Sr's care. Through caring for his father, and with the help of a pigeon-human 'imaginary friend,' Matthew begins to piece together a complex understanding of his father-from his work in the NYPD under Giuliani's mayoral term, to his secret queer relationships-and the generational differences in their queer lives that contributed to his father's secretiveness and slow coming out.
