Dylan Crenshaw, an only son, comes home from work with a letter that he is excited to show his mother, Eleanor Crenshaw. Upon entering the house, he announces to his mother that he has been accepted into college. Her response of joy is not what a son, who knows his mother's tone of voice, recognizes. Dylan then asks his mother "what's wrong?". Eleanor mentions that her cancer has returned and there is nothing more the doctors could do for her. Dylan then begins to face the reality that he may have to choose between caring for his mother and pursuing the college of his dreams. But his mother will not allow it, and she encourages him to pursue college and not worry about her. A few months later, Dylan is prepared to drive to college as he gets Eleanor's new apartment ready for her to live in. Reverend Hill, their pastor, lends a helping hand and ensures Dylan that he is making his mother proud. A few months later, Eleanor slowly passes away having seen her son Dylan graduate from college.
