A tough middle-aged widower trains a young female boxer for the state final and they become lovers. Incarcerated for a crime he didn't commit, his son takes over the coaching - and the sex. Then his father is acquitted. It's the part of the city tourists avoid, where streetwise fathers teach their sons and daughters self defense but not emotional defense. The Rival illustrates how men's instincts seem more tuned for war as a homeless father (Stephen Leeder) tries to re-kindle a relationship with his son (Brendan Rock) alienated after a tough upbringing. The father is good at inspiring lost souls in his sweaty gym but hopeless in matters of the heart. He asks his son for shelter and then money, only to be rejected. Then when a young female boxer (Wilma Kaddissi) wins both their hearts, passion enters the ring and the father and son relationship teeters on a knifes edge.
