Jelly (2022)

Sergio wakes up in the hospital after a recent suicide attempt. His partner, Laura, sits by his side, desperately wanting answers to what happened. Before he's able to open up Nurse Jaclyn arrives to check his vitals, causing Sergio to withdraw from the conversation. As Laura tries to push him to open up again it proves harder and harder until she leaves the room to take a moment. Alone, Sergio attempts to eat the pot of Jelly left by the nurse but can't face eating still. Instead, he hides the metal spoon in his bed. Laura returns and asks him to rest and they'll chat tomorrow. He agrees, but that night, alone again, Sergio attempts suicide for the second time, using the metal spoon to open his previous cut wrist. The next day, Sergio wakes up to Laura by his side again, devastated at what's happened. Sergio has been stitched back up and has survived but something has changed. As Nurse Jaclyn comes in again Laura flips, asking her to leave then attempting to force Sergio to eat the pot of jelly. This causes Sergio to react with anger and in this place of pain he opens up, admitting he can't do this to her anymore, her sadness is his fault and it's left him feeling like he has no choice. Laura listens, upset at his true feelings but glad to finally get him talking. A new day arrives and Sergio gets ready to leave the hospital, still struggling with his feelings. Laura enters and helps him zip up his jacket, he looks up and thanks her, for everything. Laura embraces him and he allows himself to hug her back tightly as we tilt down to an empty pot of jelly. Two spoons in it.
