Twelve-year-old TYRONE attends his first day at an all-boys Catholic school, only to discover that he is the only black student. Immediately, Tyrone suffers microaggressions at the hands of his new classmates, who tease him and touch his hair. For an art assignment, Tyrone creates a masterful drawing of Black Jesus, but during his presentation, he is ridiculed by his classmates. Upset and questioning himself, Tyrone throws the drawing away. During recess, a game of soccer goes wrong when one of his bullies tackles Tyrone, telling him that "they don't want him here." In the bathroom, Tyrone scrubs himself with soap, covering his face in a thick layer: whiteface. Realizing how far he's strayed from his true self, Tyrone scrounges through the trash, retrieving his drawing. When his dad picks him up at the end of the day, Tyrone hands him the drawing of Black Jesus, demonstrating his growth into a proud, young man.
