What Separates Us from the Beasts (2018)

On a bright morning somewhere in the Scottish Highlands, April visits her Aunts bookshop and discovers a book that will change her life forever. Soon faced with the impending death of her father, and only parent, April's reality blurs with that of her favorite bedtime stories. As he begins to change into a beast of their own creation, April is delighted by the wonderful twisting stories and begins to lose track of where her father and The Beast begin. As the transformation continues The Beast gains more and more control until the last tendrils of humanity left in April's father flicker out. The Beast destroys the safe haven that April and her father created, ripping to shreds the stories they wrote together. Terrified of this now unrecognizable creature, April attempts to undo the "spell" by tearing apart the book and begging for her father to come back. As The Beast dies with a long and painful roar, April glimpses her father one last time. After saying goodbye, she returns to their shattered world to pick up the pieces and continue their story. After discovering her father's steadily declining health, April's reality blurs with that of her favorite bedtime stories to help her and her father come to terms with his impending death.
