As the key Holocaust Memorial Day event for 2006 the programme was based on the theme "One Person Can Make a Difference". It honoured those who risked their own lives to save others during the Holocaust and since. Participants included Anna Bergan, an Auschwitz survivor living in Cardiff, and her daughter Eva Clarke who was born in a concentration camp; Ellen Davis whose mother and six siblings were murdered by the SS, and Sir Nicholas Winton, a former stockbroker who helped rescue 669 Czech children from Nazi-occupied Prague in 1939. Other holocaust survivors living in Wales, the families of resistance fighters, and a UN General, Romeo Dallaire, who tried to stop the genocide in Rwanda also took part. Other participants included the Chief Rabbi, Sir Jonathan Sacks, Prime Minister of the UK Tony Blair, First Minister of Wales Rhodri Morgan, opera star Katherine Jenkins and Falklands veteran Simon Weston. Children from schools across Wales and from a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds read a specially commissioned poem by Gillian Clarke, Cardiff's 2005 Centenary Poet. They told how they made a difference in some small way. There were also some 600 community-based events across the UK involving about 25,000 people, many of which were reflected in the broadcast.
