WE ARE ANIMALS investigates the animal rights movement and the debate over what rights should be extended to animals. The film takes a candid look at our historical treatment of animals as property and pets, tools, transportation; even food, as well as our use of animals for scientific experimentation. Through a series of compelling interviews with activists, authors, nutritionists, sociologists, psychiatrists, scientists, writers, religious figures, politicians; even everyday people, WE ARE ANIMALS exposes the latest discoveries on animal behavior, and the many ways in which people and animals are similar. From religious figures who believe animals are sacred and have a soul, to those who believe animals were put on this earth to serve humankind, the film examines the debate over whether animal suffering serves a greater human good, while shedding light on the controversy surrounding animal agriculture and the environmental risks; even offering possible alternatives. From on-camera interviews to historical footage and movie clips from films and TV shows, which have helped to shape our view of animals today, WE ARE ANIMALS exposes the many ways in which people have come to depend on animals, while probing the potential risks of ignoring our treatment of them.
