A conventional Russian town. An autocratic and ignorant butcher beats his wife to death. At the funeral he notices a beautiful girl. This is the daughter of a shoemaker, she came to support her fiancé in the difficult moment of his farewell to his mother. After the funeral, the butcher by treachery seeks her hand.
