The Hill in St. Louis, Missouri is an Italian American neighborhood with deep historical roots. In the late 1800s, Italians immigrated to the area to work in the many clay mines. Here they quickly took over the area and began to make it their own, building their own church, starting their own businesses, and creating a self-sufficient "city within a city." Home to baseball royalty, Yogi Berra and Joe Garagiola, The Hill was a hotbed for incredible athletic talent and had multiple players from the 1950 US Soccer Team that defeated England in what is referred to as the biggest upset in World Cup History. This "Little Italy" neighborhood is unique for multiple reasons, but the biggest being for the mere fact that it still exists and is prosperous to this day, mixing residential homes with businesses of all sorts, including its world-famous restaurants. "America's Last Little Italy: The Hill," tells the story of this enduring neighborhood by looking at the past, present, and future.
