During the GDR era, the Palace of the Republic was built in its place, which was then also laid to rubble a few years after the fall of the Wall. Now the new building on the historical foundation walls in Berlin's new old center adorns the baroque palace facades on three fronts and only shows its modern face to the east - and thus makes the breaks in its history clear. Because the clash of old and new represents not only historical reconstruction, but also a German culture of remembrance cast in concrete and carved in stone.
