The year is 1760, King George II is dead and George III is awaiting coronation. Once rural Attercliffe, near Sheffield in Yorkshire, now echoes with forging and hammering around the growing steel-making business of Benjamin Huntsman. When Benjamin's son, William, receives a letter from London, an old family conflict is rekindled. As William remembers his past, flashbacks reveal the reason for his parent's separation 27 years ago. Through William's reminiscences the events unfold which led Benjamin, a Doncaster clockmaker, to develop the crucible steel-making process.
