Ethan Trotter is not your typical addict. He looks like the boy next door; dresses like he's always about to go to a garden party; and has the sort of pleasant, charming demeanor one might associate more with a youth group leader than someone who's been in and out of rehab four times. But beneath the upbeat exterior lies someone struggling with a host of demons, including long buried curiosities about his now deceased father, and the genesis of his family's increasing dysfunction. After an unanticipated relapse, a frazzled Ethan is sent to Michigan to spend time with his estranged brother, Gabriel, and his wife, Maleena - they themselves still coping with the death of their young son just two-years prior. As Gabriel struggles to forgive and reconnect with his brother, and as Maleena grapples with the idea of having another child, Ethan finds himself befriending their next door neighbor, a famed novelist and professional curmudgeon with little use for people. Enter Elaine, Ethan and Gabriel's mother, the woman at whom most of the family aggression is aimed. When she shows up unannounced, everyone's world is thrust into chaos, deeply held truths come to the surface, and dark family secrets are revealed. It's in this melee of possible catharsis that the Trotter family must finally come face-to-face with the passive-aggressive demons that have haunted their existence for a very long time, and stunted their ability to 'move on' and 'let go'.
