The year is 1880, the country still reeling from the Civil War - the West is still Wild and poverty widespread. Pax, a woman, wife, mother, and passionate supporter of the suffrage movement, leaves her activist life in New York to faithfully follow her husband into the wilds of Gold Country - where dreams of riches have attracted many, including those where humanity has been displaced by greed. When there is no gold to be found, Pax is deserted by her husband and her family threatened by a former Confederate soldier who can't forget the losses his family suffered at the hands of Yankees in the War. Pax teaches her daughter, Ari, to be fierce, to not back down - no matter what. Ari is traumatically transformed into a citizen of this savage new reality.
