Oil Men is the first film to share the story of Canada's controversial oil sands through the lens of female characters. Leanne Romanko, a young oil and gas chemist, begins to see the negative effects of tar sands extraction in her daily life. Her mother is sick with a rare form of Leukemia caused by chemical exposure from her days as a truck driver. At the same time, a wildfire has left the landscape of her hometown devastated. Against a backdrop of tragedy, her job provides a life for her and her 1-year-old daughter. Her conscience is tested, as she must decide between environment and economy, and what will hold the brightest future for the one she loves most.
