The film is based on the 1986 non-fiction book Immodest Acts: The Life of a Lesbian Nun in Renaissance Italy by Judith C. Brown and follows the story of Benedetta Carlini, who enrolls as a novice at the convent in Pescia, Tuscany, at the end of the 17th century. Benedetta's influence on communal life is immediate and significant because she has the ability to accomplish miracles since she was a child. Benedetta premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in July 2021 and received critical acclaim for its bold and provocative storytelling, as well as its stunning cinematography and strong performances by the cast.
