The nature of graphic design, specifically in what are known as iconic design images i.e. logos, in Canada since the mid 1960s is presented. Over the entire period, the goal of the best designers has been to make the images simple, but have each component still mean something for the brand. The migration of largely white men from Europe who worked in the business led to the design trends in those early years. Three designs related to Canada as a federation are those first presented, namely the Canadian flag which was approved in 1965, and the Canada centennial and Montreal Exposition symbols in 1967, the Expo which to a large degree celebrated that centennial. Several iconic corporate logos are presented and discussed. Women in the business discuss their role in how the business has changed over the years. And the change in logos over time is also discussed, by both the original designer and by the designer of the updated logo, the two who often have differing opinions.
