When drunken and depressed divorcee Tom falls over his second-story banister to his death, he unknowingly awakens in the afterlife to find things haven't changed too much - that is, until Angie, a District Ghost Manager, arrives and rules Tom's death a suicide. Tom is told he will have to remain in his home until the date of his ghost trial to determine if he will be sent to heaven or hell. The kicker comes when Angie tells him that things don't look good for his redemption because good and bad marks have been kept on him since he was born, and he is running a major deficit. One thing that gives Tom hope, though, is that the accounting of the good and the bad continues in the afterlife, all the way up until his trial.
