CHARIVARI a fashion UPROAR is a high-concept documentary film with New York City as it's back drop. It tells the story of a single mother who in the late 1960s opened a small clothing store which would, over its 30 year presence change the American fashion landscape. We will explore the period from the company's inception, through to its demise in the late 90's. The focus will be on visionary Selma Weiser. We will tell her story through the lens of her position as a successful woman in a male dominated industry by exploring the political, economic, cultural and social conditions that contributed to the brand's success; and touching on how the AIDS crisis impacted the fashion industry, and the company. Charivari was cutting edge, sophisticated and influential yet largely forgotten.
