Protovision (2017)

Michael is minding his own business, reading quietly in his room when his parents arguing interrupts him. His dad uncomfortably faces Michael and asks for help with moving his boxes out of the crawl space. Inside the crawl space though, Michael discovers a mysterious box for the Protovision, a retro-themed virtual reality gaming headset. Michael puts it on to his immediate enjoyment. At dinner with his dad and sister, still wearing the headset. Michael's Dad makes him take it off and tries to connect with his children by offering to celebrate their upcoming birthday. Carly is sick of her dad's poor attempts at compassion and they come to a head. Michael escapes back into the virtual world where he meets Princess Clelia who asks him to grow stronger to help defend her Kingdom. Back in reality, Michael's obsession grows as day after day he spends his life in the Protovision, neglecting to face his family. Finally in the virtual kingdom, Michael meets up with the Princess to defend her from some savage bandits. But as their back and forth ensues, Michael discovers it's unfortunate similarities to his parent's own conflict. When forced to make a choice of helping the Princess or the Bandits, Michael throws off the Protovision to discover he missed his father's exit, as he's now left alone in a quiet, conflict-free home. Michael puts away the Protovision after seeing just what he missed out on.
