Set in Mobile, Alabama, a young white boxer, Del Stevens loses his son to a state adoption while he's in prison for dealing meth and his girlfriend dies of an overdose. When he's released, he discovers Jennifer and Andre Green, a wealthy African American couple who run a thriving business, have adopted his son after fostering him and giving him a loving home. While trying to get his life together, Del goes to court to get his son back while Jennifer and Andre fight to hold on to the son they've loved and nurtured for over two years, going into debt and risking their business to do so. Meanwhile, Del's slick white, bigoted attorney, Harold Bevan, makes the case a cause célèbre and escalates racial tensions that threaten to tear apart the whole community over questions of bigotry, race, rehabilitation and ultimately, the child's best interests.
