The Association of Spaceflight Professionals was established to train highly-qualified candidates as scientist-astronauts and make them available as commercial crew. Candidates are vetted through a highly-selective evaluation process drawn from the NASA Astronaut Corps, incorporating the guidance and direction of a selection panel of veteran NASA astronauts, astronaut trainers and experienced spaceflight professionals. Several members have interviewed as finalists in national astronaut candidate selection campaigns; one has completed an orbital mission conducting scientific experiments aboard the International Space Station. The organization's first series of manned spaceflights were funded by NASA in 2012.
