Driven to save lives of servicemen and women post-9/11, a single mom Navy medic deploys to Iraq where she's beloved, respected, and soon mourned when she meets her fate that leaves her preteen daughter orphaned and her retired mother, a guardian in a lurch. When death benefits are denied as a matter of policy until the preteen turns eighteen, grandma--in debt and driven by fear of losing her home and worse, her granddaughter too--fights Congress and the Department of Defense hell-bent on retaining custody and amending VA benefits.
