WASP brother and sister Randy and Judith Hastings hitchhike to working class South Philadelphia to visit their Harvard school chum Francis Geminiani, home to work for his father for the summer, on the eve of Francis' twenty-first birthday. Randy and Judith ask Francis to join them for a "free" summer road trip across the country in they planning to work moving vehicles from place to place, this trip with bigger stakes for Judith in wanting to take her and Francis' two sexual encounters to something more committed. As Randy and Judith camp out in the Geminianis' back yard until Francis' birthday party after which they plan to start their trip, they meet the bunch of eccentrics that inhabit Francis' life: his hyper-masculine divorced butcher father, Nick Geminiani; their neighbor down the street Lucille Pompi who works doing the books for the butcher shop and who is in a relationship of sorts with Nick; the Geminianis' next door neighbor, divorced Bunny Weinberger, whose outward brazen sexuality masks her insecurity, she who has yet to grow up; and Bunny's young adult son Herschel Weinberger, whose many problems, such as his asthma and his lack of social awareness, are arguably a manifestation of being overshadowed by his larger-than-life mother. Randy and Judith will spend much time with them as Francis wants to be alone to deal with an issue which may threaten his friendship with both Randy and Judith.
