Isaac Davis, a twice-divorced, 42-year-old writer, romanticizes Manhattan in his debut book while dealing with his tumultuous life. Quitting his dull TV job, he struggles to make ends meet and juggles paying alimonies to his ex-wives. His current relationship with the young Tracy seems doomed from the start. Enter Mary Wilkie, his best friend Yale's mistress, whose intellectual pretensions initially repel Isaac but soon captivate him.
