Frau Jenny Treibel is not at all happy about her son Leopold's engagement to Corinna, who is of lower social standing and comparatively poor. She wants her son to marry money and does her best to break up the engagement. The young couple, prevented from meeting by Leopold's domineering mother, keep in touch by writing and make plans to elope, if necessary abroad. However, no actions follow the words.
