Winnie (1988)

Winnie is an intellectually-disabled little girl who is committed to an institution at a very young age by her mother. Throughout the film, Winnie struggles for independence and to feel as if she is "normal". It is a true story based on the autobiography, "Winnie: My Life in the Institution."
