Part 1 of this two-part made-for-TV movie is a retelling of the original motion picture The Great Escape from 1963, which is based on an event that actually occurred. 200 Allied aircrew members attempted to escape from Stalag Luft III (Kriegsgefangenen Stammlager der Luftwaffe 3 Sagan) in Sagan, Germany (now Zagan, Poland). In that part of the story, as portrayed in the motion picture and in this production, only 76 of the 200 PWs made it out of the camp before the escape was discovered by the camp guards. Eventually, all but three of the escapees were recaptured. Seeking to set an example, Hitler ordered the Gestapo to execute two-thirds (50) of the recaptured prisoners. In Part 2, after the end of the war, two of the original 76 escapees who made it out at first, gather a group of Allied personnel and begin hunting the Gestapo officers who planned and carried out the murders of their friends and fellow PWs.
