In 1937, a two-year-old boy from a humble family in Amdo, Tibet, is identified as the 14th reincarnation of the Dalai Lama, the spiritual and political leader of his nation. Taken to Lhasa, he is educated as a monk and future head of state. As he matures, China invades Tibet, imposing an oppressive regime. Despite his efforts, including a tense meeting with Chairman Mao, relations deteriorate, and the future of the Tibet hangs in the balance.
