Peter Baldwin and his daughter Susie finally strike it rich after living in a mining camp for years and head for San Francisco to sell their claim. Martin Ledyard, a mining broker, asks them to dine at his home, but when Mrs. Ledyard sneers at their rough manners, Susie, resentful, leaves, resolving to acquire the social graces she so sorely lacks. She employs the dishonest but polished J. Wells Stanton as an etiquette instructor but soon dismisses him for rudeness. On the road, Stanton beats and robs Ledyard's son Robert, who had been turned out of his home and told to make something of himself. The Baldwins nurse him back to health and engage him to replace Stanton. Mrs. Ledyard, hearing that her son is in Susie's clutches, comes to rescue him, but when she learns that the girl who loves her son also saved his life, she finally accepts the Baldwins.
