Gangster Nick Cotrelli sends his men to fetch hired killer Aggie Lewis at the train station. Because no one knows what Aggie looks like, they pick up a woman they believe has been gunned down by a passing car. When they see that she is still alive, they drive her to Nick's place, where she is cared for by Dr. Robert N. Sanford. He quickly realizes that she hasn't been shot, but has collapsed from a bad case of pneumonia. When he discovers that his men picked up the wrong woman, Nick tries to throw her out, but Robert stops him. Soon Nick is smitten with beautiful, sweet Shirley Reed. She is touched by Nick's generosity, even more so when he gets her a job singing in his club. Meanwhile, the rival gangsters are plotting to kill Nick, but first they decide to shoot Shirley during her debut. Fortunately, Robert sees the gunman take aim and knocks him down. In revenge, Nick leaves his office by a secret passage and shoots Dorgan, the head of the gang. His alibi seems perfect until Shirley innocently reveals that he had been away from his office during the time of the shooting. Upset by her unintentional mistake, Shirley willingly agrees to marry Nick, even though she loves Robert, because as his wife she will not be able to testify against him. To keep her safe, Nick asks Robert to take Shirley to the country during the trial. When Nick visits them there, he gets a message that Dorgan's gang is waiting for him. After eliciting a vow that the gang will not harm Shirley if he lets them kill him, Nick says a loving goodbye to her and goes to meet his fate.
