The play was written in 1933 and is loosely based on a real event when a prefect was murdered on Norr Mälarstrand in Stockholm. Justice von Degerfelt celebrates his 60th birthday. The day before, he had a visit from his brother Hugo, who had returned home after a longer stay abroad. He tries to persuade the brother to return abroad. Hugo is a morphine addict, bill forger and usurer. The next day, von Degerfelt reads in the newspaper that the brother was found murdered in his home.
