Soldier Pleshcheev returned from the war blind. He drowns his grief in unrestrained drunkenness. Thus tormenting his wife and teenage son. The wife cannot stand it, and the son stays with his father at a difficult moment - this is how they live together until Pleshchev's old friend returns from the army.
