Babylon (1970)

Nafplio, Greece, 1827. In the years after the revolution against the tyrannical Ottoman Empire, a bustling inn nestled in the capital of the newly established state is a cultural and linguistic melting pot. The happy innkeeper, Bastias, has his hands full maintaining peace as diverse characters from every corner of Greece converge under his roof. But peace is a delicate thing. Before long, a brawl breaks out for the eyes of Bastias' beautiful daughter, Garoufalia. As a result, two hot-blooded rivals find themselves behind bars. Now, Commander Georgios Fantes of the Ionian police must find out what went wrong despite the frustrating language barrier. And the question remains. Will the conscientious officer ever get to the bottom of the spirited altercation?
