As a genre, bucolic dramas flourished in pre-World War II years. Due to the lack of studios, and the fact that not all films in the countryside depict pastoral Greece, the first signs of decline became evident by mid-1930s when audience fatigue started to set in. After a long hiatus, Anna's Vow, the first post-World War II film of the "fustanella" (Greek kilt) sub-genre, marks the beginning of a new era. The film pivots around moral dilemmas, and the story of a beautiful young shepherdess who finds herself with her back to the wall when confronted with a cul-de-sac, as she tries to honour her promise to her beloved husband-to-be.
