Large Highways (1953)

Yearning to escape from the harsh life of the rugged Greek countryside, Nikos Gerasimou, the only son of an impecunious family of farmers, arrives in faceless Athens to study medicine. There, a chance encounter with beautiful but equally poor Margarita, an orphaned young woman aspiring to become a singer, leads to a passionate affair and marriage. However, life can be hard when money is an issue, and before long, poverty, hardship, and a bitter financial impasse endanger their relationship. Can love last forever?
