Martin ,a young widower,is told that Françoise ,his wife who died in an accident ,would cheat on him.He begins to search her past .The gossips would call her Caline and she was his boss's lover.He tries to kill him,but the ex-lover does not register a complaint against him.Martin soon thinks that he is not his daughter's biological father and he takes a strong dislike to the girl,Josette.When she falls into the Rhône river ,he first wants to let her drown,but he finally saves her.Consumed with remorse,he sees the child differently.
