Boy meets girl and they grow close to each other in tragicomic circumstances during the years of World War II.Pesho's parents are poor workers living in a squalid district of the capital, while Violetta attend high school. The two start going around together, and their meetings are sometimes sad and sometimes merry. Imperceptibly, a gulf opens between them, the gulf separating the world of the rich from the world of the poor. After the initial period of enthusiasm into which she is drawn by the boy, Violeta's attitude gradually cools to what she regards as childish and naive antifascist actions. For his part, Pesho is painfully aware of the hostility with which his sweetheart's milieu treats him. When they part for the first time, the gulf between them yawns wide. Pesho gets involved in the clandestine activities of the Young Communist League. Violeta, however stays on the tennis court where the students of German Language School court her. However, the two still care for each other, and they seek a hiding place for their love. The series of romantic dates is resumed, but after the most exhilarating one the lovers are suddenly brought down from heaven to earth by fascist police. The first serious ordeal becomes the teenager's initiation into manhood. Violeta is to week to struggle. Her father takes her away. Parting is painful experience for both the lovers. After his first lesson, Pesho follows in the footsteps of his elder brother. He enters the struggle for a better world without class barriers
