The action takes place in a magical hotel, where all the guests rent their watches to Mr. Porter, as required by the rules. Each hotel room is a number representing the year the song was first sung, and the guest is the song's performer. At the same time, the film covers songs from different eras of the 20th century: from the 1930s to the 1990s.
