Unemployed East Berliner Hinrich Lobek spends his days in slippers on the TV couch while his wife pursues a career as an architect at Potsdamer Platz. Slowly she loses patience with her lethargic husband, and so Lobek decides to go to the job center. There he is given the unpleasant job of a representative for indoor fountains. Together with a colleague from the West, Lobek has to clean door handles in dreary prefabricated buildings to get rid of the kitschy humidifiers. In a contemplative hour, however, the melancholy Ossi uses a fretsaw to transform the fountains into small GDR altars, from which the Alexanderplatz television tower rises, bubbling joyfully to the sounds of the former national anthem "Auferstanden aus Ruinen". His "Atlantis" model sells like hot cakes and the shy Lobek unexpectedly becomes a successful businessman. Meanwhile, his marriage to Julia slides into crisis.
