Petko returns to his native village to take over the management of the cooperative farm, which is lagging behind. Right from the start, he confronts with a number of malpractices, made by Chairman of village council, together with his father and Vando. Scared by the arrival of Petko, they pour the stolen grain into the river. Their fellow-villager Toncho discovers it, but he keeps silent about it. Anonymous letter sent to the Party district committee speaks of an alleged affair between Petko and Toncho's wife Gana. She who has long wanted a child is pregnant at last. Vando makes Toncho drunk. He stays out late and Gana, by herself, helps a cow to calve but slips and suffers a miscarriage. In the brawl, what flares up, Vando kills Toncho fearing that he might expose the villains. Suspicions fall on Petko. He is arrested; his Party membership card is taken. One of the villains makes a full confession to the Party secretary. After his rehabilitation, Petko refuses to go to work in the capital and remains in the village to regain the lost confidence of the people.
