Four actors dressed up in costumes of the 11th century arrives to a secluded villa in rural Umbria in a room reproducing the decoration of the throne room of Henry IV. They are to play attendants to Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV. Unfortunately, one of them is new to the play and has assumed that the ruler is Henry IV of France five centuries later. Eventually, however, the four of them turn out to be attendants not, as initially perceived, in a play about the Emperor. Instead it is about a rich Count who lapsed into madness following an injury while playing Henry IV. TV adaptation of Pirandello's 1921 stage play.
