Despite the abolition of slavery in Bahia in the 1920s, blacks in rural areas continue to be oppressed. Manoel (Aílton Carmo) is among them and was introduced to capoeira as a child by Master Alípio (Macalé). Alípio not only taught him the martial art's techniques but also virtues of focus and justice. Inspired by the beetle that shouldn't fly but does, Manoel adopts the name Besouro. As Besouro grows, he defends his people by confronting oppression and prejudice.
